Ode to a Fire Pit...
How can something that is not very special become special?
Well, if that something is a Fire Pit - ours became special when it brightened up our lives and the lives of our friends during the darkest days of the Pandemic.
This particular Fire Pit arrived at our house several years earlier, with little fanfare after my in-laws sold their house.
Upon arrival, it spent most of its time hidden away beneath our deck and was rarely used.
That all changed in March of 2020 when the world shut down - including the neighborhood Irish Pub that we and our friends (and our dogs) would frequent for Happy Hour on a weekly basis.
Like many other people - at first we tried doing Happy Hour via Zoom - but that got old after a few weeks.
When it became clear that things were not going to be re-opening any time soon, a small group of trusted friends from the Pub decided to get together for a socially distanced Happy Hour in our driveway - with the Fire Pit.
These Fire Pit Happy Hours became a regular occurrence throughout the pandemic and provided a unique opportunity to get together and share stories about how we were adapting to this strange new world that had been thrust upon us.
Over the summer, we had a patio installed in our back yard and the Fire Pit Happy Hours moved to this new venue and continued throughout the fall and winter.
As long as the temperature was above freezing - people dressed for the weather and the wood from the forest behind our house fueled the Fire Pit and - it continued to keep us warm and hopeful.
After we sold our house last spring the Fire Pit went into storage again.
Since our new home in Delaware does not allow open flame Fire Pits, we needed to find a new home for our loyal and trusted Fire Pit.
So, as we get ready for our move, I am happy to announce that the Fire Pit will be going to my friend Pete's home - and that he has agreed to take good care of it and has promised to host Fire Pit Happy Hours on a regular basis.
Farewell my Fire Pit friend - you have served us well.
